CityBox Executive Essence™

Deborah Lanham turns relationships into opportunities for growth—connecting businesses, organizations, civic leaders, government, entrepreneurs, and community stakeholders around programs, partnerships, and initiatives designed to create meaningful and lasting impact.

Her leadership is distinguished not simply by an ability to bring people together, but by what she helps build from those connections: stronger organizations, new programs, economic-development opportunities, expanded networks, and pathways for businesses and communities to grow together.

Executive Overview

Deborah Lanham is Founder and CEO of Deborah Lanham Consulting, LLC, where she helps chambers of commerce, nonprofits, corporations, small businesses, government entities, and other organizations strengthen their connection to the communities and markets they serve. Her consulting work encompasses economic initiatives, organizational analysis, board development, membership growth, fundraising, community outreach, strategic partnerships, local-market expansion, business development, and organizational visibility.

Before establishing her current consulting practice, Lanham served as President and CEO of the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce, beginning in January 2020 following a competitive executive search. Her appointment followed nearly eight years with the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, including approximately four years as Vice President of Business Development. During that earlier tenure, she was credited with record-breaking membership growth, advancing diversity and inclusion, and helping expand programming involving technology, women in business, and young professionals.

Her leadership at the Alpharetta Chamber unfolded during a consequential period for businesses and communities. Entering the CEO role immediately before the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lanham helped the organization respond to immediate business needs while continuing to advance economic development, entrepreneurship, community engagement, and strategic programming.

Her tenure included the Chamber's partnership in establishing the Downtown Alpharetta District, its community partnership surrounding CodeLaunch ATL 2021, business-recovery programming such as Ready, Set, OPEN!, and the 2023 introduction of Women Excelling. Together, these initiatives demonstrate a leadership model that extends beyond convening people toward creating structures through which relationships can produce economic and community value.

Today, Lanham brings that experience into a broader consulting environment. Her firm's work reflects the same principle that has shaped much of her career: when the right experience, connections, organizations, and ideas are brought together intentionally, communities and the organizations within them can grow more effectively. Her firm reports experience encompassing more than 750 events and strategic programs, 30% membership and event revenue growth, and more than a decade of board experience across nonprofit, government, and public-private environments.

Why This Leader Matters

Strong communities do not develop through individual organizations working in isolation. They grow through the connective infrastructure among businesses, entrepreneurs, government, nonprofits, educational institutions, civic organizations, investors, and community leaders.

Deborah Lanham's career has largely been built within that connective space.

Her leadership record demonstrates an ability to recognize where interests intersect and then help transform those intersections into programs, partnerships, resources, visibility, and opportunities. It is a distinction between simply building a network and developing relationship capital—connections capable of creating measurable value for the people and organizations involved.

That ability is visible across very different environments. During economic uncertainty, she convened expertise for businesses navigating reopening. In economic development, she helped advance a unified Downtown Alpharetta initiative. Within technology and entrepreneurship, she supported Alpharetta's participation in CodeLaunch's expansion. Through women's programming and broader community initiatives, she helped create environments where professionals could develop relationships and access resources.

Her continued work as a consultant and invited speaker demonstrates the portability of that experience beyond a single organization. Lanham's leadership value lies in understanding not only who should be connected, but how those connections can be transformed into something productive.

Selected Leadership Milestones

Deborah Lanham's professional record reflects sustained leadership across business development, chamber management, economic development, organizational growth, entrepreneurship, community engagement, public-private collaboration, and executive thought leadership.

Before assuming leadership of the Alpharetta Chamber, Lanham spent nearly eight years with the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, ultimately serving as Vice President of Business Development.

Her responsibilities included oversight involving membership services, sales, marketing, finance, and key Chamber initiatives. She was credited with achieving record-breaking growth across individual, business, and corporate memberships while helping expand programming involving technology, women in business, young professionals, and diversity and inclusion.

Her role in the region's technology ecosystem was particularly notable. At the time of her appointment to lead the Alpharetta Chamber, then-State Senator Brandon Beach specifically credited Lanham with being instrumental in starting Tech400, an initiative designed to support and showcase North Fulton's technology sector.

President & CEO | Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce

Lanham was selected as President and CEO of the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce in January 2020 following a competitive executive search.

Her appointment brought together extensive experience in membership development, programming, sales, marketing, business development, operations, and community engagement, with local leaders at the time emphasizing her collaborative relationships across both business and public-policy communities.

Business Recovery Leadership | Ready, Set, OPEN!

Only months after assuming the Chamber's leadership, Lanham faced the widespread economic disruption created by COVID-19.

In May 2020, she personally convened Ready, Set, OPEN! A Smart Conversation About Recovery, a free virtual program designed to give Alpharetta businesses access to current reopening information and perspectives from government, community, legal, and business experts.

The initiative demonstrated a responsive dimension of her leadership: using the Chamber's convening power not simply for networking, but to connect businesses with practical information during a period of uncertainty.

Economic Development | Downtown Alpharetta District

During Lanham's tenure, the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce and Development Authority of Alpharetta partnered to establish the Downtown Alpharetta District, formally organizing a 1.72-square-mile downtown area encompassing more than 600 businesses, restaurants, retailers, and other destinations.

The initiative was created to strengthen the district through coordinated economic activity, marketing, experiences, business retention and recruitment, and greater connectivity among businesses, workers, visitors, and residents. Lanham also publicly discussed the District and the Chamber's broader strategy for Alpharetta's economic growth during her tenure.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship | CodeLaunch ATL 2021

Lanham also played a documented partnership role in bringing CodeLaunch ATL 2021 to Alpharetta.

In an interview conducted from CodeLaunch, Lanham explained that the possibility of the organization expanding into the Atlanta market had been presented to her earlier in 2021. As President and CEO of the Alpharetta Chamber, she advocated for Alpharetta as the location. She credited Chamber member Scott McMichael of Improving with beginning the conversations and described months of Chamber involvement in planning and promotion as a community partner.

CodeLaunch independently identifies the August 18, 2021 Alpharetta event as the first CodeLaunch held outside the Dallas–Fort Worth market. Hosted by Improving at the Legacy Theatre at Phase Events in Alpharetta, the gathering attracted close to 400 attendees and connected startups with technology professionals, development teams, investors, and entrepreneurial resources.

The milestone illustrates a recurring characteristic of Lanham's leadership: recognizing the potential within an existing relationship and helping convert it into a broader opportunity for the business community.

Women's Professional Development | Women Excelling

In 2023, during Lanham's tenure as CEO, the Alpharetta Chamber introduced Women Excelling, programming designed to create opportunities for women to connect and advance their personal and professional development.

Contemporary Chamber communications document the inaugural programming and subsequent Women Excelling events during 2023, while Chamber sponsorship materials placed the program among its principal event offerings under Lanham's leadership.

For editorial accuracy, CityBox Index attributes this as a program launched during Lanham's leadership, rather than representing her as its sole creator.

Education & Business Connection | Innovation Academy

Lanham has also contributed to connections between education and the business community through service involving Innovation Academy.

Her professional record identifies service with the Innovation Academy Foundation beginning in 2020 and membership on the FCS Innovation Academy Board from 2021 through 2023, including support for efforts connecting the school with business partnerships in Alpharetta.

Executive Thought Leadership | ARENCON Global & CityBox

Following her tenure with the Alpharetta Chamber, Lanham became a recurring invited speaker within ARENCON Global and CityBox leadership gatherings in Atlanta.

On November 16, 2023, she served as a guest speaker for the ARENCON Atlanta Industry Spotlight hosted in collaboration with the Mercedes-Benz Experience Center by RBM of Alpharetta at Halcyon Forsyth, representing the consulting and chamber-of-commerce sector.

On January 31, 2024, she returned as a guest speaker for The Milestone Series Featuring The Trailblazers, appearing alongside keynote speaker Michael B. Vlass and fellow guest speakers Jim Jacoby and Oscar Harris.

Her participation continued throughout 2024. She was an invited guest speaker for The Catalysts on June 26, served as opening speaker for the TwentyFive Series on July 31, and delivered welcome remarks at the CityBox Elite Speakers Series on October 30. These gatherings were hosted in collaboration with ARENCON Global, CityBox, and the Mercedes-Benz Experience Center by RBM of Alpharetta at Halcyon Forsyth.

Her recurring participation reflects continued recognition of her perspective in conversations involving entrepreneurship, strategic relationships, organizational growth, business development, and cross-industry collaboration.

Founder & CEO | Deborah Lanham Consulting

Through Deborah Lanham Consulting, Lanham has expanded the experience gained throughout her chamber and civic leadership career into a cross-sector advisory practice.

Her work assists chambers with organizational assessment, board development, membership and economic initiatives; nonprofits with growth and fundraising; corporations with community engagement and brand building; small businesses with connections and strategic focus; government entities with business partnerships; and organizations seeking stronger representation and relationships within North Georgia's growing markets.

Her consulting platform describes the underlying philosophy succinctly: organizational growth and community growth are interconnected, and meaningful partnerships can create benefits for everyone involved.
